The 17-35 2.8L predates the Canon DSLR line, therefore it
cannot possibly have been designed for 1.6x sensors. I
got mine (my first "L" glass) in July '97.

Back then, only Kodak made digital bodies for EF mount -
converted from EOS 1 - and Canon didn't play the DSLR
field.

The 16-35 2.8L is the successor of the 17-35 2.8L, and is
generally considered and improvment over its predecessor,
especially in the corners.

It is my understanding the both lenses were designed for
type 135 film (aka 35mm) bodies.

BTW, lenses designed for APS size sensors often have a
smaller image circle, and when used with 35mm full-frame
bodies (film or digital) will have black (or very dark)
corners and sides.

This is aside from any corner sharpness issues should
the lens actually cover full-frame.
