It's definitely worth it - as someone else mentioned, the 50/1.8 is really cheap
and can take outstanding pictures. If you need something to play with in the mean time,
that might be just the thing.

1) If I ever get a DSLR with a 1.0x sensor will I have really *big* problems with distortion?

The 17-85 is an EF-S lens (just like the 18-55 you have) and won't mount on a full frame body.
