Hello,
Finally, I´m thinking of switching to digital.
The 5D is really interesting, because it got a full frame sensor. But as
an EOS 1V user, I really would miss all the AF sensors. And the speed
of course.
The 20D is not really an alternative, as it got the 1.6 crop factor. And
the 1Ds Mark II is far too expensive.
So, I thought about buying an used EOS 1D Mark II. I saw several
bodies for quite a good price. But I wonder if the 8 mp would be good
enough for a double spread in a magazine? I work as a freelancer for
several magazines. Although I like to shoot with my 16-35L, I think I
could live with the 1.3 crop factor.
I would really appreciate your help/comments/input.
Thanks,
Marco

Marco,
I haven't used the 1D MkII but have used D60, 10D and 1Ds MkII and IMO the
answer to "I wonder if the 8 mp would be good
enough for a double spread in a magazine?" is not as straight forward as yes
or no.
To achieve A3 at 300 dpi the file needs to be 3488 x 4950, that's a 3:2 file
of 3488 x 5232 with no allowance for vertical bleed. That's more res than
even the 1DsMkII. So either some interpolation is required or the output
resolution has to be reduced.
As the print industry has 300 dpi as it's standard, interpolation is often
used.
So much for the theory, now for the practice.
I've had DPSs from the D60 and 10D that were at least as good as scans from
35mm, but the subject matter had no obvious fine detail nor anything that
would reveal the interpolation (E.g three fashion models, full length with
an out of focus background). The clothing was reproduced at a size whereby
the weave of the fabric would not be visible, hair like-wise. Skin tones and
back ground are smooth and so interpolate well.
I've also had subject matter where the interpolation makes the image "fall
apart". (E.g three shelves about a metre wide with cosmetics and beauty
products all with fine lettering). My client, who had been extremely happy
with my 10D files, was very glad that I also shot a 5x4 tranny.
Just to qualify, I shoot RAW and when I knew the image was going to DPS,
converted to 16 bit tiff and up-ressed before any other processing. I would
use PS7 bicubic in 20 percent increments. With the 1Ds MkII this is no
longer necessary as the up-res is so much less I'm willing to leave it to my
client, though they all know that they can come back to me for a
re-interpretation from the RAW file.
I guess I'm actually saying that, IMO, the answer is Yes and No.
HTH or possibly STHBNH (sorry to have been no help :¬)
