I've taken 12,000 pictures on my 5D, and only had it happen once.
Removing and remounting the lens fixed it.  The 300D had it happen a lot
and there was nothing I could do about it, but turning it off never
helped.  I had to remove the batteries and wait 30 seconds when it
happened.  I can't remember the 20D having it ever happen, but the 20D
would periodically lock up and stop responding without producing an error.
