The 75-300mm IS is very sharp at 75 to 175, good up to about 230, and OK at 300mm. Also, Chip is correct when he noted the newer 70-200mm is sharper than the older one. The newer IS 70-200 is really excellent. The real question is how sharp is enough? Everyone chases the holy grail of sharpness but very few will ever really see that sharpness in a print unless you are blowing it up to at least 16x20. Anyone tells you otherwise they are full of it.
