My only gripe with this lense is that it sucks in dust.

The push pull desing was always adding dust spots to my digital sensor. 

The images were fantastic though, sharp with absolutely beautiful colour
depth.

I sold mine and got a 300mm f4 IS.  I can use it with a 1.4x or 2x
converter and have a great range.  It's also lighter (just) and not too
big, 1.2kg for 300 vs 1.4kg for 100-400.  Better value for me.  I've
shot it with the 2x for birds and have gotten flawless bird detail.

I know Jim uses his 100-400 for Birds and he gets amazing detail in
feathers etc..  I think he also uses a monopod.
