The 100-400 is an unwieldy front-heavy beast. My arms get quite
sore if I cannot use a monopod. To get best performance, use MLU
and a tripod.
The EF 70-300 IS USM is just as fast, almost as sharp, has better
Image Stabilizer, and is a whole lot lighter. On an APS-C sensor
body, the extra 30mm works better for indoor sports, while the
300mm gives as much reach as a 480mm on full frame.
I find myself reaching for my wife's 70-300 IS instead of my
100-400 IS :-)

Have you've (or anyone else, FTM) tried the 70-300 with a 500D c/u filter?
