I went for the 2.8 IS version. The IS is really handy, to me, but the
weight and bulk of this lens is substantial. Close focus is about
1 foot too long. If I point the lens straight down, I have to go up
on my tip toes to get focus. If the lens just had an extra foot closer
focus, .... I guess that is what macro lenses are for. Why is 0.25X
the default close focus anyway. If you look through all the lens specs,
it seems that, except for macro specific lenses, 0.25X seems to be
the max close focus magnification. Why is that? I'll have to check
this lens out with 25mm extension.

The other consideration might be performance with 1.4X and 2.0X
converters. I consider a tripod collar essential in the usability of this
class of lens. This is an "option" in the /4 version.
