I still use my old 15/3.5 Nikkor that I've had since the 80's on my
EOS cameras. Generally better performance than what Canon offers in
that range, except for flare.
Actually, at present I mainly use a 12-24/4.5-5.6 Sigma in that range
by preference, as my copy is quite good and definitely better than my
16-35 EF lens in the range that they overlap.
Since I still have a number of manual focus Nikkors for my F2, I
still use many of them when auto diaphragm action isn't required, and
I either don't have any Canon lenses in that range and/or Canon
doesn't have anything that compares reasonably. I have a 100/2.8 USM,
but use the 55/3.5 Nikkor (a lot better in the macro range than the
EF50/2.5) and the 200/4 Micro Nikkor, as well as a 400/5.6 Nikkor
that is significantly sharper than Canon's EF 400/5.6, just with
crappy handling. The Nikkor on the 5D gives great quality, but it
sure isn't as convenient as the 100-400, or even the 400/5.6.

Me again, Henning. It's fun how two photographers may have such a
different perception. I own both the Nikkor 15mm f3.5 and the Canon 14mm
f2.8. Although the Nikkor is used in some of my 10 Nikon reflex cameras
I have too an adapter for Canon EF and I have shot with my Ids MkII. By
no means the Nikkor is a better lens, at least in my experience. Any
kind of lateral light produces huge flare and distortion, vignetting and
resolution is not better. I have too shot with both a borrowed Sigma
12-24 and mine Canon 16-35 again in a 1Ds MII and while these extreme
wide angle lense are far from perfection in the Sigma I had to close
three or four stops to get something neat in borders and corners or even
more. Not that the 16-35 was a marvel but significantly better. I have
too a Nikkor 17-35mm f2.8 which is in fact better than Canon in corners
but worse in center.
I have the legendary Micro Nikkor 55mm f3.5 and probably it could be
better than Canon macros but reading the Leica guru Erwin Putts tests I
saw that he compared the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro to the more legendary
Leica R 100mm APO Makro.
In my almost 150 different lenses collection some Leica and Carl Zeiss
items surpass the Canon lenses but not so often some of the 30 Nikkor
lenses I've used in the past times and still remain in my cabinet.
Regards.
Felix
