I can imagine the LCD uses a lot of juice. If you didn't need to review
pictures much, you could turn it off and shoot quite a bit, I bet. In one
of my 3500 picture days, I forgot to turn off my LCD review for the first 15
minutes, so it looked like a strobe on my face.
I would really love the BG-E2 for vertical shots.. but with the problems
people have had, I figured it's not worth the trouble. Plus, my company
recommends that I only use one battery in the BG-E2 at a time, so the other
can be charging.
I loved running NiMH's in my BP-50 for the ElanIIe. Love that feeling on my
pinky too.

Yes, I've since discovered this. My error. Boy there's a lot to keep
track of on this camera. I'm gradually assimilating it all. 2500 on one
charge eh? The battery capacity must expand as you go along, as my first
recharge/battery low came after about 700 shots. That was with the OOB
battery and with the LCD on 4" review. Now I'm recharging much less
often, although I haven't counted. In any case, impressive performance
Now with the BG-E2, even better I epxect.
