What are people's favorite external battery packs for the 580EX? There
are a lot out there, including a few by Canon. I do own a Quantum 1+, but
am not crazy about the modules that require leaving the door ajar.

I use a Sunpak T-2000, about $250 from B&H. It uses a Quantum cable to plug
into the input on the side of the flash. Extra battery "clusters" are
available for about $70 from the same source. I get pretty good capacity
from it, and it's lighter and cheaper than the Quantum alternatives...
I can shoot an 8 hr wedding using two clusters.
