For all its limitations, the Organizer in Adobe Photoshop Elements (v3.0 and up [but not v2.0 that comes with the EOS 20D]) allows you to group a series of edits of the same photo as a "Version set", and also allows you to group a series of related photos as a "Stack". This way, even my wife can easily keep track of all the different files in a workflow without getting overwhelmed.
