How fast do you need the flash to recycle?

Many years ago, while I was still using a Quantum external battery pack, I
made the mistake of putting the camera on a ledge 2 feet above the ground to
walk over to the bride/groom to straighten out a few details, totally
forgetting the battery pack is still clipped to my waist, needless to say
the camera and flash fell to the ground when I got far enough away from the
ledge, damaging the Tamron lens significantly although only the flash and
camera actually made contact to the floor.....

I've since been using AA size NiMH rechargeable batteries only, they've been
getting up in capacity every year, it's up to 2,500 MAh now, a huge
improvement over the NiCad formulation only 10 years ago when 800 or 1,000
MAh were the highest one can get in the AA size.

It comes down to the recycle time you need, otherwise you may be better off
staying with the AA NiMH, they may hit 2,800 or even 3,000 MAh by next year,
they are economical enough to replace every year if you want to.

If you must use an external pack, you maybe able to file a notch on the
flash battery compartment door so you can still close the door using the
Quantum adaptor, I did that for the 550 flash.
