Cotty, For the limited flash photography (both studio and on-camera) I've done, I've always used manual mode as it gives me full control and I don't have to remember what the flash will do in a particular mode. There are no rules dictating which mode you should use. As long as you know what the camera/flash will do in the mode of your choice so you can predict the results, you're good.
This site is great for fill flash advice (and general flash stuff too): <http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101-balancing-flash-and.html> Tom On 7/25/06, Cotty <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Just reading the thread about the 17-40 + flash currently running, got me thinking about fill-in flash, or fill flash as the yanks say. I have a 1DII and a 580EX and seldom if ever shoot using fill flash. If I shoot 'normal' flash then I shoot manual, 1/250th at f5.6 or f8 and let the flash do the rest, and it works great. I did some ad-hoc group shots (exterior day, cloudy) the other day and took the flash (in case of bright sunshine) but hadn't thought about it at all (I'm like that sometimes ;-) and ended up using just shooting ambient as I hated what the flash was doing in Av. I've since read this page: <http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/index2.html> and realise I should maybe have used Program (which I never use at all)... What methods do listers use for fill flash, and why?
