I have the 24-70 2.8 and it is by far my most used lens. Absolutely superb to use, produces wonderful results. I'm always suspicious of zooms that offer too much range - all zoom lenses are a compromise and I feel a large focal range will be detrimental to image quality. Having said that, indeed why have a zoom at all?? Convenience I suppose. My most used lens, but not may favourite, that's an 85mm 1.4 prime. I have no experience with the 25-105, but the extra stop on the 24-70 is enough to convince me.
