Yet for whatever reason, almost nobody ever does.

At least that's my experience: top posters almost always include
the original message complete, without any trimming, whereas
bottom-posters mostly trim it at least somewhat (exceptions being
mainly habitual top-posters trying conform to mailing list rules
or to demonstrate how ugly bottom-posting is).

And that's really what most bothers me in top-posting: it seems to
encourage excessive quoting. But perhaps it's just a coincidence.
