Maybe that was the only way to get the wide open performance. Hey, not a big deal, only $330 for a new Hoya 82mm Circular Polarizing Pro 1 Digital Multi-Coated (Super HMC) Glass Filter. What's a few bucks anyway? I'd be very curious to know the real performance gain. Of course, what's the point of getting a better sensor (Mark III camera) if the resolution limit is set by the lenses? Hence a new lens to help sell the camera.
