They didn't taint the image.
The first EOS 1D was a 1.3X camera and all previous digital EOS SLR's
(D2000, D6000, DCS1, DCS3) were 1.3-1.7X cameras.
It was almost a year later that Canon introduced the first full-frame
camera, the EOS 1Ds.
So far there have been only 2 full-frame EOS 1Dx cameras and 6 EOS 1
based digital SLR's. The full-frame camera is the rarity.
