2 of my friends and I own EOS 20D's (I also used to own a 10D) and none
of us are particularly happy with the sharpness of the images we are
getting.
We've adjusted the in-camera sharpness control (with some positive
results) and sharpened the images in Photoshop (with some more positive
results). However, the images still don't look really sharp.
One of my friends shoots with mostly EF-S glass, but has recently added
the EF 35mm f/1.4L, the other friend shoots primarily with new "L"
zooms. I shoot with older "L" zooms and an assortment of primes,
including the EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro.
We are comparing the digital images we get at 100% on our monitors and
we see other images (including Canon's samples) that just look sharper.
We have all photographed with other cameras in the past so we have a
baseline for expectations. I've shot with both EOS film and FD Canon's,
one friend shot with a Canon A-1 for many years. He also has some
amazingly sharp sample prints from a Nikon CoolPix 5700.
I've heard, here, that Canon can "calibrate" the camera to produce
sharper results and I have questions...
• Does Canon need both camera body and lenses (I've got more than a
dozen, half of them are not Canon brand)?
• How long does it take?
• What does it cost for out-of-warranty cameras?
• Does it actually work (does anyone have a before and after test shot)?
• WHY CAN'T CANON GET THIS RIGHT IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS???

P.S. Does anyone have an opinion of the relative sharpness of the
images produced by the EOS 5D compared to the 20D?
