This is the sentence I'm caught up on "we take the same exact image of a
group of people".

That, to me, means your resultant image is identically framed...and
therefore either you back up with the Rebel XTi to make the "same exact
image" (if using the same focal length lenses), or you use an appropriate
focal length lense to make up for the 1.6x crop factor to make the "same
exact image".

Exact same image to me means the image is framed identically, as in, has the
exact same image content.  If you are taking a picture of 10 people and
frame it so you're just getting those 10 in it, you do the same with both
cameras.
