I shipped it by Fed Ex on Monday, and Canon received it Tuesday morning, but apparently had a backlog and didn't get to it until today. I got an estimate by email for $305, which breaks down as $290 for minimum labor charge with minor parts, plus $15 for return shipping (with a disclaimer that they could find additional damage that would increase the price), and an estimated repair time of seven business days. The estimate included this language: "The Canon USA repair facility may repair your equipment or exchange it for refurbished equipment of the same model, or for a new or refurbished equipment of an equivalent model to your equipment, with the same or additional features. Please note that recovered, remanufactured, repaired and/or recycled parts may be used in connection with such repair." So what happens if they stick someone else's "recovered parts" in my camera and they break right away? I called Canon customer service to ask about the warranty of their factory repairs and was told it is only 90 days. FWIW, someone on the 20D Yahoo list had a similar problem, and she said that Canon completely replaced the guts of her camera with new parts and she was happy with the repair. I'm going to have to think about this one.
