It seems that you haven't called eq::init when you reach this assertion.

We actually want to get away from *requiring* init to be called, but this will 
require some work on the master branch.

Yes, see above. You should not need to rewrite the wrapper, since 0.6 and 1.0 
are not that far apart conceptually.
