Bill,

The medical question has been answered clearly by the FAA. If your MOST
RECENT medical expired in good standing, you're good to go with the
driver's license "medical."

If your LAST medical certificate was revoked or your LAST attempt to
renew resulted in a DENIAL, then you need to resolve the problem and get
a new 3rd class medical - one time - so the FAA's last record of you
will be that you were fit to fly.

The FAA can't say you're fit to fly if your last paper work with them
was a denial or revocation.

This means for me that I have to jump through the expensive hoops to get
my medical, one time, then when it expires I'll be a Private Pilot
operating under the privileges of a Sport Pilot. I only plan to get
that medical once - I can be content as a "PPOUPOASP" - but I can't
afford the costs and insecurity of fighting the special issuance
procedure every two years.

You can confirm this with Sue if you want.
