Yesterday I flew out to Hays, KS (from the Kansas City area) to look at the prototype light sport airplane RANS is building. This is about a 250 mile trip by air. Four hours out into a headwind with two stops for fuel - one was a bust as there was no fuel available at Freeman Field in Junction Field. Still four hours over the sun drenched plains of Kansas. Just great. Flew as low as practical to avoild the higher head winds at altitude. Ground speed in the 80's most of the time. The temperature at Hays was 83 deg - very warm for western Kansas in November but appreciated by all. The best part was the return trip with those headwinds now tailwinds and they had increased. Climbed to 5500 feet and saw ground speeds consistently in the 130's and as high as 135. Homeward bound trip took only two hours with no stops and got me back the 63K well before the sun set - a condition of my flying as a Sport Pilot. The aircraft under construction by RANS is going to be a winner. If I thought I could finish it before I got too old to fly it I would place an order - I would like to fly something more modern than my Coupe.
