Hi Ed: I have accomplished the change in exhaust 2 or 3 times. Yes, it does
seem to give you more horsepower, along with more exhaust noise. And it removes
the muffler from the front side of the firewall.
You will need to get a one time approval on a 337
form from your local FSDO. After you receive approval for the change, you will
need to remove the original exhaust and the single piece bottom skin under your
engine. This skin will need to be split in two pieces, have the hole patched,
where the old exhaust muffler exited, and have two new slots cut for the Alon
style exhaust. You will also need one, or two depending on the condition of your
old one, heat muffs. The Alon style muffs use springs wound around the
stack inside the heat muff to make the air travel farther and gain more exhaust
heat. Then, after the new exhaust is installed, you can replace the bottom skin,
and put everything back together.
If you need help with the 337 form, I can probably
provide a copy.
Good Luck.
