Interesting discussion --- followed up by an acident report in General Aviation News, December 24th, 2004 issue.

"Inflight Engine Fire leads to crash that Kills two."

Piper Saratoga II
Woodbury, Conn
2 killed
Destroyed....
Probable Cause: " An Engine fire for undetermined reasons, which resulted in the loss of control, and the airplane's subsequent impact with the terrain."

Shame the airplane didn't have a valve to turn off the flow of gasoline to the engine compartment. They may have made it to a off field landing site, safely .

Adding checking the valve on preflight makes sense.......and using a very fine safety wire to the on position as required by the specs, also makes sense.

Also, is the valve frozen in position ???  seems like a thing to check once in a while.
