All,

I had written before that my right mag went bad after a cross country
to Kansas City from St. Clair, MO, about 200 miles. Actually, I think I
wrote that it was my left mag, but it was, in reality, my right one.
Executive Beechcraft put new spark plugs in and installed new breaker
points on the right mag. It seemed OK after that, although the drop on
the right mag was more than the left.

I was ready to solo Sunday, but noticed a power drop on the takeoff run
and the plane settled back down after climbing a couple of feet off the
runway. I still had lots of room left, so I stopped it and taxied back.
I figured I should do another mag check just to make sure - but this
time the right mag dropped 200 RPM and the left didn't drop hardly at
all, obviously exceeding the 70 RPM the POH calls out as the maximum
difference between mags. So much for my solo.

I'm waiting for the mechanic to take a look at it (my plane is at a
small field the the mechanic comes out as needed), but it's looking
like there may be a more fundamental problem with the mag. The engine
was missing a bit on the right mag, too.

So now I'm faced again with the dilemma of whether to rebuild the right
mag or go with Slicks. I was hoping this was a problem I could put off,
but it doesn't look like it.

I've gotten lots of advice, but it would be interesting to take a poll
on this - what would you do? I would think that if I were to have both
mags rebuilt, it might be better to just go ahead and put new Slicks
on. But if I just have the right rebuilt, that could be much cheaper.

Thanks,

Larry
