You may not need a TSO, but for sure you will need a Field Approval in order to put it in a certificated aircraft.

James:

1. Can you explain: "EAA says TSO
doesn't count for the old 'Coupe on stuff that it did not ship with"

Can you point to a reference where I can read and quote that interpretation?

Does that mean that if I install a VSI, it does not need to be TSO?

2. What size horn (suction in inches) are you using to drive your artificial
horizon? Are you using a 5 or a 8 inch? If an 8 inch, did you install a
regulator to turn down the suction?

Thanks

Last summer I splurged and installed an attitude indicator. In doing
my shopping, eBay looked less and less attractive, as there's a fair
chance that an eBay instrument will need a rebuild (on top of you
auction "deal"). I ended up getting a factory rebuild directly from
Kelly Manufacturing (R. C. Allen instrument) and it was for all intents
& purposes a new instrument, complete with FAA pedigree (TSO'd, and
whatever paper they like for a certified aircraft, albeit EAA says TSO
doesn't count for the old 'Coupe on stuff that it did not ship with).
Anyway, they sent me a lovely instrument that was mostly new parts and
works beautifully. $400.

Ed, if you need a 2" venturi to drive your turn n' bank, I have one
"surplus", as I had to get a big honker to drive my artificial horizon.
Indeed, I may have a "surplus" turn n' bank soon, too, but it seems to
need overhaul of its gyro. The ball part seems stuck, but it's not:
it's a no peddles Ercoupe and the ball just sits there. My plane was
acquired with a manifold pressure gauge (horizon gyro there now) and
the sick turn n' bank. Since none of my instructors put much emphasis
on the turn n' bank, I'm thinking of putting a directional gyro there
as I think the horizon gyro (plus compass or GPS electronic
"directional gyro" or the actual gyro if I follow through) makes the
turn n' bank pretty unnecessary. Nevertheless, as they say, different
strokes for different folks, and obviously you'd like a turn n' bank...
and Shirley at Kelly (800-RCA-GYRO) might be able to fix you up very
nicely.

Isn't "John Boy", the Kennedy one, not the Denver one?

-- whatever - both sad cases. I expect y'all know the singer John was
sans medical, it having been pulled owing to too many DUIs? I gather
he flew his new toy without becoming truly familiar with it. I read
Yeager's autobiography and he indicated that thorough knowledge of the
A/C he was flying saved his bacon time and again.

Best to you and yours,

J. Beach Brennan
