The new sport pilot rules address two separate issues for the pilot, issues not to be confused.  First, it created a new pilot certificate, a certificate that limits the licensed pilot to fly only two place, low performance aircraft.  Second, it created a new catagory into which new aircraft can be manufactured (two place, low performance).  This new catagory of aircraft can then been flown by pilots holding only the new level of certificate (and of course any pilot with a higher level of pilot certificate).  This new catagory of aircraft also has new and relaxed maintanance and inspection requirements permitted with it.  Now, what confuses folks it this.  Some previously manufactured aircraft (415C, Aeronca, J3, Tcraft, etc) just happen to already have the same low  maximum performance for which a sport pilot rating approves a pilot sport pilot to fly.  Therefore, a newly licensed sport pilot can check out in and fly these specific aircraft also.  But that is all that occurs with these already manufactured aircraft.  Nothing else changes about them except this  new catagory of pilot can fly them.  All maintanance and inspection requirements that have applied to them through the years are still exactly the same.  Just because a pilot holding a sport pilot only license flys one doesn' t place the aircraft into the new manufactured sport aircraft catagory.  It remains the same old airplane with the same old requirements, regardless of whos flying it at the time.  roger----- Original Message -----

Well put (I think).  For more confusion go to http://www.sportpilot.org/lsa/maintenance_certification.html

Hello All,
Am I wrong, or does this mean that an annual no longer
has to be signed of by an A.I. if the aircraft is flown by
a Sport Pilot but required if flown by a certificated pilot?
