I think it’s the fuel tank, not the
firewall, that’s 9” from the instrument panel.
I bet you could find a newer AH that’d
run on vacuum, be cheaper, and not be as deep.
Also, if you are just using it as a
backup, you might talk to your FSDO about the new, no-moving-parts electronic
artificial horizons. If you are wanting a TSOd gyro for instrument
training and flying, they may or may not accept the non-TSO electronic AH.
Please post what you settle upon and what,
if anything, you had to do to get approval.
