I have a bungee cord that I wrap around the prop and hook on the side of the cowl that hold the cowl secure while I mess in the engine.  Also good for wiping off the oil on the inside of cowl.  It has the rubber on the hooks and doesn't scratch the cowl.  Throw it in the back when done (and don't forget to take it off before starting the engine).  You can also hook on both cowl's to keep full engine compartment available.  Works well for one man maint.

You can tell an Ercoupe owner by the oil spot on the top of his AOPA hat.

Syd, Hartmut, Byron,

Thanks for your inputs. I'll leave all of your replies herein. To review: (1) I suspect my present oil temp readings @ 163 deg F, may lower to a below boil-off temp after the hot summer months (2)I am aware that the best method would be to remove and immerse the oil temp bulb in a "double boiler" can heated to the boiling point of the water. I will have that done by a mechanic when it is convenient. Right now it isn't (3) I seek a "quick and dirty" method for checking the accuracy of my oil temp gauge immediately after flight. I have tried lowering a candy thermometer into the oil sump, but it is too demanding and messy for me to do with the cowl resting on my head, and both hands full of screwdriver, thermometer, rags, and oil filler cap. (4) I inquired here on the Tech site about the utility of the no-contact, easy to use, inexpensive , multi-purpose, infrared thermometer - with a laser pointer.
So far, it appears that the Harbor Freight item will do the trick for me. I note that it (even the laser pointer version) is less than half the price of similar ones sold by Graninger Electric.
I know this isn't hi-tech, but it gives me something to do with my time, and keeps me away from TV and out of saloons.

Thanks again,     DON

Syd.

The original idea was to verify the oil temperature without disassembling the engine. (Some folks don't want to or shouldn't work on their engines.)
The oil temp bulb is located very close to the oil tank in the oil circulation. The oil tank is before the oil pump, the oil screen with the temp bulb comes after the oil pump.
You can open the oil tank quiet easily and measure the oil directly shortly after engine shutdown. Since the engine & oil is keeping its temperature for some time, you'll probably get an accurate reading that either verifies your reading of the gauge or not.

I don't get it.  Why do you want to know the oil temperature in the oil tank?  The oil temperature at the oil temp gauge bulb is the only one that counts.  If you doubt the accuracy of your gauge, remove the bulb (not a big job) and immerse it in boiling water.  We all know that water boils at 212 degrees F. at sea level, and slightly cooler at higher altitudes.  Sorry for sounding harsh, but I guess I'm just confused.

I use one like it at work.  Works well on non reflective surface when I use it on shiny metal I put duct tape on surface. I would probably be accurate on the oil tank.  You have to watch the size of the sample area which gets bigger the farther you are from the surface.  Gives instant reading no time to wait for the temp to stabilize.   Hope this helps.

Hi, Chris and Hartmut,

I note that only a tiny square of non- reflecting tape might be applied to the sump tank, not repainting the entire tank. Hartmut's $12 thermometer is much like the $4 candy thermometerI already have. However, it doesn't have the added features of the $30 one I asked about, i.e., it can seek out hot spots on heating/air conditionng ducts, and temps of hot/cold air coming out of the vents, AND tell your actual hot water heater temps to compare with the settings you have made. Again, I ask if any of you have experience with the device I mentioned, and is a laser pointer a desired feature?

It will give a good idea of the temp of the oil tank, for example.  Which is close to the actual oil temp.  The tank needs to be painted flat black.

Here's an interesting item from Harbor Freight. Could it be used to measure post-flight oil sump temp? Anyone out there with hands on experience? A version with a laser pointer is only 10 bucks more.
