The original idea was to verify the oil temperature
without disassembling the engine. (Some folks don't want to or shouldn't work on
their engines.)
The oil temp bulb is located very close to the oil
tank in the oil circulation. The oil tank is before the oil pump, the oil screen
with the temp bulb comes after the oil pump.
You can open the oil tank quiet easily and measure the oil
directly shortly after engine shutdown. Since the engine & oil is
keeping its temperature for some time, you'll probably get an accurate reading
that either verifies your reading of the gauge or not.

Why do you want to know the oil temperature in the oil tank? The oil temperature at the oil temp gauge bulb is the only one that counts. If you doubt the accuracy of your gauge, remove the bulb (not a big job) and immerse it in boiling water. We all know that water boils at 212 degrees F. at sea level, and slightly cooler at higher altitudes. Sorry for sounding harsh, but I guess I'm just confused.

I note that only a tiny square of non- reflecting tape might be applied to the sump tank, not repainting the entire tank. Hartmut's $12 thermometer is much like the $4 candy thermometerI already have. However, it doesn't have the added features of the $30 one I asked about, i.e., it can seek out hot spots on heating/air conditionng ducts, and temps of hot/cold air coming out of the vents, AND tell your actual hot water heater temps to compare with the settings you have made. Again, I ask if any of you have experience with the device I mentioned, and is a laser pointer a desired feature?

It will give a good idea of the temp of the oil tank, for example. Which is close to the actual oil temp. The tank needs to be painted flat black.
