I was flying last weekend and after 2 1/2 hours I landed for fuel. The engine oil temp was 180degrees F and it was about 85 degrees air temp. I added 1 qt of  100w oil and after about 15 minutes I was ready to continue my trip. When I started the engine I had no oil pressure, I let it run for about 30 seconds and shut it down. I have had this problem on an initial start after the engine hasnt run for 2 weeks or more but never on a hot motor. I pulled the oil filter and filled it with oil and spun it back on and tried again. Still no oil pressure. I pulled the oil pressure line at the firewall and started the engine and nothing came out. I let it cool for 2 hours, filled the oil filter again and squirted oil in the hole in the filter mount, spun the filter on and tried again and I had oil pressure. Flew another 1 1/2 hours and havent had a problem since.
Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Eliacim.
Removing the piston from the cylinder is not so bad if done carefully.
In no case should it have such an effect on the performance.
You worked a lot on the ignition. I suggest you and your mechanic are double checking magneto and spark plug wiring plus spark plugs.
I would replace the right gear magneto with a suitable one, just to verify the performance of the one you just repaired.
If that turns out ok, think what else had been touched.

You could also check for air leaks around the intake tubes. - but since your engine idles well, there should not be problems. (Nobody touched the carburetor - right?)

No, I think your "upgrade" did not improve your plane as imagined. You'll need to double check the magneto and plug installation.

This is my personal opinion on that, of course, I can be wrong - have been often enough.

Richard:
I will look at throttle, carb heat and mixture linkages for range of travel.

When we took the cylinder out from the engine we did not pull the piston out of the cylinder, just enough out that we could remove the pin, but the piston rings never came out of the cylinder. Likewise, when we installed the cylinder back on the plane, we did not pull the piston out.

Thanks a lot

Eliacim, If they replaced the cylinder to crankcase o- ring they would have to pull the cylinder from the piston. I would first check throttle linkage and carb heat control for full off position.  If they pulled the cylinder which they would have to to install the o-ring it should have been honed and new rings installed. You mentioned new spark plugs on top, how about the bottom? I'm not an expert in this field just some things I would check. Dick L. 3041H

After doing a lot of work on my plane during the last 2 weeks, we tested it today (hoping to be through) and it won't develop full power.

The following work was done:
1. Removed cylinder to fix helicoil and replaced it, (hopefully the repair shop did not to remove the piston from the cylinder...) . Used new intake and exhaust gaskets as well as new cylinder to crackcase O ring.
2. New magneto harness
3. New shielded spark plugs on top, elimminating the 90 degree cans.
4. New impulse coupling and drive gear on right magneto
5. Installed spark plug blisters.

The engine starts quickly, runs smooth, and run up at 2,000 RPM (indicated) is perfect, showing slight magento drops and a larger drop with carb heat.

However, the engine does not develop more than 2100 RPM indiated on the tach (1920 measured with an optical prop tach)

After working for the last 3 days in 1 though 5 above, my AP and I did not have time to continue troubleshooting, and gave up for the day (and for the week, due to our schedules) (Yes, I am frustrated about driving , instead of flying to Terrell.)

Next time we work on the plane (next week, after Terrell) we plan to do a compression check, since we suspect maybe the shop that fixed the helicoil may have pulled the piston out of the cylinder and disturbed the seals. Does that make any sense?

Any other suggestions as to what to look for??

Any and all advice will be appreciated.

Eliacim
