Ed, a rough diagram would be valuable for everyone if you could draw one up. Very valuable. The tool that is, not the tongue position so much.

Roger,

As Hartmut correctly said, a tool is needed to compress the stack.  Like Hartmut, I used a hydraulic press.

After most of an hour of trying to get the ring into the grove (working through those two little holes), I asked the old guys who hang around the FBO’s lounge.  One of them got the first ring in 20 minutes with much fewer curse words than I used.

After trying the second stack’s ring for over 20 minutes, I asked the old guy again.  He got this one in less than 10 minutes.

It takes perseverance and manual dexterity.

John Wright, Sr., made a tool for compressing the stack.  He used two squares of 3/8” (or so) thick steel.  He burned a hole in the center of each.  One of the holes extends to the edge of the metal.  He put a bolt hole in each corner of both steel plates then used very long bolts (?threaded rods?) to connect the two squares.

With the shock-absorber stack between the two plates and the ends sticking through the center holes, he tightens the bolts till the stack is compressed.  This allows him to hold the assembly in his lap or any position and fight with the [EMAIL PROTECTED] thing.  Also, this tool is portable.

Also you have to hold your tongue in the correct corner of your mouth, touching certain teeth but not others while you do the work (correct corner and tooth selection varies with user).

Good luck.
