Hey Roger: separating the MLG legs is a fairly simple process. There is a special nut and lock washer on the outside of the joint. Bend any tangs of the lock washer that are holding the nut in position. Then (assuming you do not have the special tool for the nut) carefully use a punch and hammer to remove the nut. I find that most of them will turn by hand after moving the nut less than a turn.
I have also found that I can remove play in the lower leg by either replacing one or both large Bakelite washers. Alternatively, I have also been able to remove some play by squeezing the joint together with C clamps and tightening the nut some. I would be very careful using the last method, not to put too much stress on the landing gear knee.
John at Skyport has kits with new Bakelite washers for repairing the landing gear knees.
