I had no data plate on my Ercoupe when I got it. At the time of purchase I thought that the little tag on the tail was the data plate. I was wrong.
It looked like someone took the data plate off when they added the "hat shelf" and never replaced it.
I have all the log books and it still has it original engine cases with that number. It has the hayes brakes and steel landing gear that would be correct for the serial #. I have the 1956 airworthyness cert.  In short it is the right airplane.
The local FAA guy came out (along with a stack of papers about an inch and a half thick that was the paper work that the FAA had in their files on NC87384) and inspected the airplane and my documents. They matched all the info that the FAA had on it so he wrote a letter for me that instructed Univair to make me a new data plate. I sent Univair the letter and 35 bucks and they sent me the data plate.
The guy from the FAA was really a great help. I was nervous that they might do something terrible to me or my airplane, but that was not the case.

Where is the ORIGINAL data plate actually required?  I note that data plates can be purchased, new, from aircraft parts distributors. Years ago, I was told that one needs the original, but, I cannot find an effective regulation that, in fact, supports such a contention.

As a matter of fact, if you upgrade a ‘Coupe from a C to a D, using a package kit, a new data plate is part of the upgrade package.

This tail cone ID info is a recent requiirement of the FARs, (1990s) not an imprint of the S/N by ERCo at manufacture time.
The original data plates were all that is required as long as they meet the
more recent FAR,  which I don't have my fingers on right now.  There are
airplanes flying around (not Ercoupes, that I am aware of) that an appropriate
log entry would be: Replaced everything except data plate,  legal? - possibly.
I haven't tried it, but why not?
