Alan,

As I understand it, ethanol isn’t dissolved fully in gasoline.  It’s in a stable suspension.  (Chemists please correct me, if needed.)

In the presence of water, the ethanol comes out of suspension and mixes (dissolves) in the water.  We’ve all seen that booze stays mixed – the alcohol doesn’t separate from the water at any concentration from 3.2% beer to Everclear.

So, if your olive jar has 1” of water and 5” of gasoline then you put on the lid and shake it.  You let it settle for a minute or some fraction thereof.

If the 10% alcohol in the fuel joins the water, you’d have 1.5” of “water” looking substance and 4.5” of gasoline.

A half inch difference should be easy enough to see.
