A short time ago we had a posting from someone that got an entirely different
reading on this subject from another FSDO.  That FSDO said that if a 337
had been filed and received by FAA the airworthiness certificate didn't
require changing.  If FAA has the 337 documenting the change, then
the change/conversion occurred.

Hello to all,
After reading this and my own experience with the supposed "D" conversion I thought I would add my two cents. There seem to be quite a few coupes out there that have been incorrectly coveted to D models. Unless the FAA has issued a new airworthiness certificate indicating that the change to D model took place, the aircraft is still eligible for LSA use. My coupe was supposedly converted to a D model and operated as such until I bought it and discovered that the airworthiness certificate had never been changed. After several meetings with various FSDO officials it was determined that regardless of the 337 forms that had been completed in the past, unless a new airworthiness certificate was issued reading "415D" the aircraft remained a C model and therefore LSA compliant. It appears that in the good old days many conversions were carried out incorrectly and no one really cared. Now that the LSA category has come about, many of these bogus conversions have come to peoples attention. Hopefully this will make a few more coupes eligible for those looking for LSA models.

I came close to buying Ercoupe N93932 advertized on barnstormers.com as a LSA qualified "415-C/D" with a C-90 engine. The logs had no entry indicating a change from the original C model to a D, but there was also no new weight and balance data after the engine change. When I got the CD on the ship from the FAA, there buried in the paperwork was the form indicating the conversion to a 415-D. A deal killer for an old pilot now having to fly in the light sport category. 
 
I've about given up trying to find a LSA qualified Coupe in resonable shape at a resonable price, and am now negotiating to by an old Taylorcraft.
