Manufacturing a new center spar is a big deal - certification testing, product liability risk, engineering fees, all add up.
 
The reason airplanes will always be expensive, as will major parts is a simple thing.
 
Airplanes are still made by hand.  No robotic factories for something made in such small unit quantities.  If the numbers of cars sold were as small as the numbers of airplanes, a simple Saturn would cost $75,000.

Ah, a taste of why a powerful type club is a very important thing.

I wish that too. Univair is just selling the parts left over from the 50 year old stock for ever rising prices.
 
Nobody else is allowed to make new parts but Univair is out of tanks, cooling scoops etc. The last time I spoke to them they were proud to have new center spars pre-manufactured in anticipation of their own Center section AD. It was supposed to sell at $8000 each.
It can't be that costly to make a center spar. And I just checked their site - the price rose a bit :
ERCOUPE CTR SECT BEAM EXCHA $9,263.25
 
 
10 k for the center - I wonder if they ever sold one.
 
I suggest that the millionaires under us should meet somehow, throw their change together and buy the TC and all stock and tooling - make me the managing director of the thing and we will see new Ercoupes at a speed that only the FAA would be able to slow down.
