My Alon does the same thing. The oil gets on the inside of the left hand cowling, and leaks to the outside through the rivets/rivet holes where the cowl stiffener is riveted on. I have three very minor oil seepages on my engine, and I think the oil on the cowling is coming from one or more of these sources. These sources are: 1. The oil filler cap leaks a tiny bit, even though the gaskets are new and look OK.
2. One of the left hand rocker covers seeps a little oil.
3. The oil quick drain in the oil tank seeps a bit of oil. This is probably the worst leak of all and is probably the source of my oil on the cowling. There is a rubber o-ring in this drain valve that I think needs to be replaced. I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. YOu can check this by flushing out the inside of the drain outlet with avgas and then seeing if oil shows up there again. When I touch the end of the oil outlet, it's always wet with oil, so I know mine is leaking.
My engine is freshly overhauled too, but the oil dipstick and the oil quick drain were not overhauled in the process. They were seeping oil before, and they still are. Interestingly, when you look in the engine compartment, you really don't see much, if any, sign of an oil leak. It always looks pretty dry in there, with just a minor trace of oil in the bottom of the cowling. But I do have a streak or two of oil on the outside of the left hand cowling after every flight of 30 minutes or more.

Ever since i bought my Ercoupe when I fly a slight trail of oil appears on the left side of the lower cowl (on the outside). Even after the engine was rebuilt it still does it. I'm having my mechanic look at it. Any ideas of where this could be coming from, particularly since the engine did it before and after a major overhaul?
