----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----I must disagree, Ralph. Sure, I'd like to fly my ALON occasionally with the canopy open, but am not presently doing so because I consider it a life threatening thing to do. At least one ALON canopy has separated it flight, perhaps more. Yet, the Coupers who know the details have not yet provided them on this site. Yes, there have been discussions about "visually inspecting" the opening and latching hardware (rollers in aluminum grooves on each side and center behind the aft windows), but nothing that would make a mech or myself know for sure the that in flight separation is impossible! Can you imagine the damage a separated canopy could do the elevator and rudders ?! An uncontrollable airplane and fatal crash could easily be the outcome. Having such a catastrophe occur while flying a Young Eagle could bring a huge lawsuit(s) and an end to that program! I do not dispute comments such as "...well, I do it all the time with no problems" , but I am not at all convinced these are pertinent or indicative of reality in this matter. In a way, it reminds me of the gent who ripped the wings off his Coupe while doing unauthorized aerobatics - and so we had needless fatalities, and SB 32 to contend with.
Does anyone on this Site know the facts about these separations?? If so, please come forward and speak up. Thank you. Don

Subject: RE: [COUPERS-TECH] closing canopy in flight
Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2006 21:09:58 -0800----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----Though I always wished to own an Alon, I always still expected that I’d miss that open cockpit flying that’s so convenient in the earlier model Coupes.
No need to miss it in an Alon! In the summer often enough I'll fly with canopy open. I open and close the canopy in flight without a problem.See Coupers-Flyin for a story about open canopies and Young Eagles.Ralph FinchCalifornia============================================================================== To leave this forum go to: http://ercoupers.com/lists.htm
