What your friend says is absolutely correct.

Such devices as alternators, voltage regulators, electric motors, etc. are
often apparently the same units used in aircraft and autos.

But, the testing criteria are must tighter for the airplane unit.  A single
unit can pass quality control for auto use and be rejected for aircraft use.

Often, separate QC inspectors are trained to run separate QC lines, one for
auto and one for aircraft parts.

Then, as your friend says, there is the paperwork trail issue that applies
only to those parts destined for aircraft, and isn't an issue for those
units to be used in cars.

Since the QC standards are tighter for the aircraft parts, the rejection
rate is higher, and parts that can't be sold naturally increase the total
costs of manufacture of those that can be used.

So, there really are many differences.

  A friend of mine worked in a factory about 30 years ago where he did
quality control.  He mentioned that one of the widgets they made was used
for aircraft as well as autos.



  I started ranting about how much aircraft approved parts cost compared to
identical auto parts.



  He explained to me how much more quality control their airplane parts get,
that it's a small run and that they get separate packaging and a paperwork
trail.  OK, I guess I'm willing to pay somewhat more for the "identical"
aircraft part.



  I understand even if I don't necessarily like it.
