Friends, from what I read and what I've seen the tanks of our coupes had been assembled with some sort of compound at the seams to assure leak tightness. Then in Memorandum 33 " Repair of Aluminum Fuel Tanks" we can read under D. Sloshing: 1. Sloshing of tanks should be accomplished with a solution of equal parts of EC570 and ethyl-dichloride. Then it goes on only to cover the seams and not the whole tank, but who knows if the mechanic was reading that far. So sloshing is recommend by Erco. Where to get EC570, I don't know. I believe this to be factory original. My logbooks do not say anything about the tanks ever leaking or being sloshed. This material does not look like what one would think that sloshing compound would look like. It is very thin, and you can see right through it in places. It really looks more like a varnish or shellac than any kind of sloshing material I have ever seen. I know that this material has been in my tanks since at least 1982 when we first owned the plane. I have had no issues with any of this material coming off or disolving. It looks like it is there to stay. I don't know how it would do with auto fuel, as I've always used AvGas. If so, there are bunches of illegal Coupes. And maybe the Alon was made under different rules. But the sloshing compound becomes more of an issue if fuel is used that contains additives which might attack the sloshing compound. It might be proper to take into consideration whether you’re considering using Auto fuel with its wider range of additives including probable ethanol contamination. I believe a BROWN coating indicates automotive sloshing compound? What affect does this have on the performance of an aircraft? Is it a common coating in 1966 Alon Aircoupes? The Alon I was looking at have a brown coating in all of the tanks, but it did not really look like sloshing compund. I withheld a deposit until I heard from the group. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
