Jim,

I compiled the pre-purchase check list with input and review from three
Coupe mechanics and that subject is one where I don't have much, if any,
personal knowledge. ((I'm not any kind of mechanic.))

I've since heard John Wright, Jr., (of Coupe fuel tank rebuilding fame)
exclaim that no sloshing compound is legal in a Coupe. If so, there are
bunches of illegal Coupes. And maybe the Alon was made under different
rules. But the sloshing compound becomes more of an issue if fuel is used
that contains additives which might attack the sloshing compound.

It might be proper to take into consideration whether you're considering
using Auto fuel with its wider range of additives including probable ethanol
contamination.

Let's look for the response from the others.

Subject: Brown coating in Alon Fuel Tanks

Hello fellow Ercoupers,

I looked at an ALON today and, using the prepurchase check list, I came upon
an item dealing with the fuel tanks, which talked about trying to
distinguish between automotive and aircraft sloshing compound in tanks. I
believe a BROWN coating indicates automotive sloshing compound? What affect
does this have on the performance of an aircraft? Is it a common coating in
1966 Alon Aircoupes? The Alon I was looking at have a brown coating in all
of the tanks, but it did not really look like sloshing compund. I withheld a
deposit until I heard from the group. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.
