Scott.

1. If your engine had a top overhaul only and got the Sky Tech starter
installed at that time, the flakes are probably coming from that starter
installation.
To install the sky Tech starter one has to saw off a shaft directly on the
engine. Depending on how careful the mechanic was, some metal pieces can make
it into the engine. Of course anything else can disintegrate. Verify that the
flakes are not iron by putting a magnet over them , also sometimes carbon looks
pretty much like brass when the light has the right angle. Depending on the
amount and size of the findings, I would not worry too much. The Continental
overhaul manual speaks of some normal abrasion in the running in period. And
your cylinders are being ran in. I would suspect the valve guides being rubbed
to size.

2. You don't have remove the screen when installing the oil filter. It is only
that you would still have to check the screen at every oil change, since the
oil passed the screen first and then the spin on filter.
That means that the screen will still collect all the dead bugs and lost nuts
that are being sucked up by the oil pump.

Summery : No worry - check the screen.

1. last oil change - I have some small brass flakes in the filter ( spin on
filter). I had a top end done about 50 hours ago. Is this normal swarf from a
top end o-haul or where could the brass be coming from? Note - I had a
Sky-Tech starter installed - could it be bushing material?

  2. I have the spin-on oil filter. Who ever installed the filter, left the
fine screen on the oil screen. My understanding is that the fine screen gets
removed
from the oil screen but leave the course screen intact.
      Does anyone know?

  Thanks,

  Scott
