Sorry to be so stoopid, but I had the idea that an high quality weld, 
especially with a V - cut into the problem (crack) would be 
significantly stronger than the as - manufactured piece.  Is this 
"garbage knowledge"? - - - or is it something contrary to FAA 
Standards?

I feel simple-minded now, thinking that an excellent aluminum weld 
could not repair a cracked casting.  Please correct my simple soul.  
(Obviously it has occurred to me that this has come up in the past 
sixty years, but I have not seen any discussion of it.  Perhaps it is 
that cut-and-dried and so that there is nothing to discuss at this 
point.)
