I don't remember the exact details, but I know that on some of these starter 
upgrades you need to cut a certain part, while masking the engine opening, so 
cutting debris does not fall into the engine. As I understand it, if you were 
to split the crank case, you could remove this part without having to cut it. 
I wish I had the foresight and the money to upgrade my starter in 2006, when I 
overhauled my engine.
I am sure other forum members who have actually done this can give you better 
information.
