Eliacim is right. To install a SkyTec starter there is a guide shaft
that needs to be cut off. The area around the shaft is covered
creating a water-proof dam. A grinding disk is used to cut the part
off. The previous owner of my Coupe did it for me before I took
delivery. I also got a chance to look at the work in progress being
done on a different Ercoupe.

I like the SkyTec starter, but I did have some problems with shear
pins for a while. The mags were rebuilt and the timing adjusted as I
remember it. Since I have just gotten my bird back in the air, I can't
report yet whether the problem is gone for good. The new starter saved
me 5 lbs, I believe and I have a push button instead of a pull lever
now.

starter upgrades you need to cut a certain part, while masking the
engine opening, so cutting debris does not fall into the engine. As I
understand it, if you were to split the crank case, you could remove
this part without having to cut it.
