I wonder if this relates to the requirement to have a medical to "exercise the 
priveledges"

A CFI doesn't need a medical if he doesn't act as PIC.  If it's just a BFI, 
your uncle should be current.

My great uncle may need to find a CFI in Pittsburgh who's familiar with 
Ercoupes to give him his BFI. The CFI he'd been using (I can't remember his 
name) has an expired medical, and is concerned that he may not be able to get 
it renewed. If he passes his medical, my great uncle with just keep using him, 
but otherwise, he'll need to find a new CFI. To put it in his words, he doesn't 
want some "young hotshot" who's just building hours to become an airline pilot. 
Anybody know of any good CFIs around Pittsburgh that are familiar with
