Ask him to show you the AD. When he can't, ask him by what authority the factory installed mixture control was removed. If he doesn't hit you, he may be willing to reinstall it for you. That said, it's best to overhaul the carburetor first as the mixture control hasn't moved since it was wired rich and probably won't work correctly. The mixture distribution on these old engines is so uneven that an EGT gauge is probably overkill...
